Roof Slope Multiplier Guide

Roof Pitch Factor

Find the roof pitch factor or multiplier for common roof pitches, understand how it converts horizontal run into sloped roof length, and calculate the factor for your own roof measurements.

A roof pitch factor is the multiplier between horizontal run and sloped roof length. For example, a 6/12 roof has a pitch factor of approximately 1.118, while an 8/12 roof has a factor of approximately 1.202.

What Is a Roof Pitch Factor?

The roof pitch factor, sometimes called a roof pitch multiplier or slope factor, represents the relationship between horizontal run and the corresponding sloped roof length.

A factor of 1.000 would represent a completely horizontal line. As roof pitch increases, the factor increases because the sloped distance becomes longer than the horizontal run.

For example, a 6/12 roof has a factor of approximately 1.118. A 12-foot horizontal run multiplied by 1.118 gives an approximate sloped length of 13.42 feet for the same simple right-triangle geometry.

Pitch factor is useful for geometric conversions, but real roofing measurements may also require allowances for overhangs, ridges, hips, valleys, waste and other roof details.
Roof Pitch Factor Formula
Factor = √(Run² + Rise²) ÷ Run

For a 6/12 pitch:

√(12² + 6²) ÷ 12 = 1.118

A horizontal distance can then be multiplied by 1.118 to estimate the corresponding sloped distance at a 6/12 pitch.

How to Use a Roof Pitch Multiplier

Once you know the factor, multiply the horizontal measurement by it to estimate the corresponding sloped distance.

Example: 6/12 Roof

1.118

A 6/12 roof has a pitch factor of approximately 1.118. If the horizontal run is 20 feet:

20 ft × 1.118 = 22.36 ft

The corresponding simple sloped distance is approximately 22.36 feet.

Example: 8/12 Roof

1.202

An 8/12 roof has a factor of approximately 1.202. For a 20-foot horizontal run:

20 ft × 1.202 = 24.04 ft

The corresponding simple sloped distance is approximately 24.04 feet.

What Is Roof Pitch Factor Used For?

Roof pitch multipliers are useful when converting horizontal measurements into measurements along the roof slope.

01

Sloped Length

Convert a horizontal run into its corresponding diagonal roof distance for a simple roof section.

02

Roof Area Reference

For simple roof planes, a pitch factor can help convert projected horizontal measurements toward an approximate sloped surface measurement.

03

Comparing Roof Pitches

The factor makes it easy to see how increasing roof steepness increases sloped distance for the same horizontal run.

Roof Pitch Factor FAQs

Quick answers about roof pitch factors, multipliers and sloped roof measurements.

What is a roof pitch factor?

A roof pitch factor is the ratio between a sloped roof length and its corresponding horizontal run. It can be used as a multiplier when converting horizontal measurements into sloped measurements.

What is the roof pitch factor for a 4/12 roof?

A 4/12 roof has a pitch factor of approximately 1.054.

What is the roof pitch factor for a 6/12 roof?

A 6/12 roof has a pitch factor of approximately 1.118.

What is the roof pitch multiplier for an 8/12 roof?

An 8/12 roof has a pitch multiplier of approximately 1.202.

What is the factor for a 12/12 roof?

A 12/12 roof has a pitch factor of approximately 1.414.

How do I calculate roof pitch factor?

Calculate the diagonal length using rise and run, then divide that diagonal by the horizontal run. The formula is √(run² + rise²) ÷ run.

Is roof pitch factor the same as roof pitch multiplier?

In this context, the terms are commonly used to describe the same type of multiplier between horizontal and sloped measurements.

Can I multiply roof area by the pitch factor?

For a simple roof plane, a pitch factor can help convert horizontal projected area toward approximate sloped area. Complex roofs, overhangs, hips, valleys and waste require additional measurement and adjustment.
