Calculate sloped roof area from building length, width and roof pitch. Include overhang and waste allowance to estimate roofing square footage, roofing squares and material area.
Example: a 40 × 24 ft building with a 6/12 pitch and a 1 ft overhang on all sides has an effective projected area of 1,092 sq ft. Applying the 6/12 pitch factor gives approximately 1,220.89 sq ft of sloped roof area.
For a simple symmetrical gable roof, the projected roof footprint starts with the effective building length and width. If an overhang is entered, it is added to both sides of each building dimension.
The projected horizontal area is then multiplied by the roof pitch factor. This adjusts the flat footprint to account for the additional surface created by the roof slope.
The resulting value is the approximate total sloped area of both roof planes. You can then apply a waste allowance to estimate the material area needed.
Enter building length, width and roof pitch. Add optional overhang and waste allowance to calculate projected area, sloped roof area, roofing squares and estimated material area.
Enter building dimensions and roof pitch to calculate area.
Estimate simple gable roof area in three steps.
Enter the building length and width using feet or meters.
Enter the roof rise for a standard 12-unit run, such as 4/12, 6/12 or 8/12.
Add optional horizontal overhang and a material waste percentage for a more useful estimate.
The calculator first finds projected area, then adjusts it using the roof pitch factor.
When overhang is used on all sides:
Example:
Multiply projected area by the roof pitch factor.
For a 6/12 roof:
Example using a 6/12 pitch, one-foot overhang on all sides and a 10% waste allowance.
This is the horizontal plan area after adding the one-foot overhang to all four sides.
Applying the 6/12 pitch factor converts the projected footprint into approximate roof surface area.
Adding a 10% allowance gives an approximate material-area planning figure.
For the same 1,092 sq ft projected footprint, steeper roof pitches create more sloped surface area.
| Pitch | Angle | Pitch Factor | Approx. Roof Area |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4/12 | 18.43° | 1.054 | 1,150.97 ft² |
| 6/12 | 26.57° | 1.118 | 1,220.89 ft² |
| 8/12 | 33.69° | 1.202 | 1,312.58 ft² |
| 12/12 | 45° | 1.414 | 1,544.09 ft² |

Common questions about roof square footage, pitch factors, roofing squares and waste.
For a simple rectangular gable roof, find the horizontal projected roof area and multiply it by the roof pitch factor to account for slope.
A steeper roof has more surface area than a flatter roof over the same projected footprint. The pitch factor represents that increase.
In U.S. roofing terminology, one roofing square represents 100 square feet of roof area. For example, 1,220.89 sq ft is approximately 12.21 roofing squares.
Yes. The optional overhang value is added to both ends of the building length and both sides of the building width before projected area is calculated.
A waste allowance can provide additional material for cuts and installation losses. The appropriate allowance varies by roof geometry, material and job.
The current calculator is intended for a simple symmetrical rectangular gable roof. Hip roofs, valleys, dormers and intersecting sections should be measured with a method appropriate to their geometry.
Yes. The calculator supports feet and meters. Keep all dimensions in the selected unit.
Use the result as an estimating reference. Verify field measurements, roof geometry, product coverage, waste requirements and installation specifications before ordering roofing materials.
